Predicting the future is always so enchanting, isn’t it? Especially when you know you aren’t going to be around to validate it. You can just let your imagination run wild. I predict that by the early 3000s, humanity would have found a new home where food will be very different from the food we eat now, and humans will fly. Those who are born at in a couple of 100 years might have a slight chance of knowing what actually happens, but you and me will not be around to witness the prediction I just made.

A great way of making sure our vision is carried forward to the generation in the future is by putting it on something tangible. Like the written word, a video, or a painting, perhaps? Well, that’s what Jean-Marc Cote and other French artists in 1899, 1900, 1901 and 1910, did. These artists painted a fascinating picture of what they thought would be the future of humanity. These paintings enclosed in cigarette and cigar boxes in Paris, found by the Washington Post,  show us what the artists thought ‘France in the year 2000’ would be like.

Let’s see how much of it they predicted accurately.

Amazing, isn’t it? While most of the visions of the painters still remain a far fetched dream, some have actually got them right with the mechanical farming tools, the helicopter, the aerial battles and what seems to be a vacuum cleaner.

My favourite? The whale-bus of course!
