It was a crisp Sunday morning, as I sat with a mug of coffee and contemplated. I had always been a rebel, questioning everything that seemed otherwise trite to the world. I blatantly deride the tradition of arrange-marriages. After innumerable failed attempts by my family and friends, my grandmother took the responsibility of talking some sense into me.

We had lunch date followed by a visit to an orphanage. As I took the turn to the drive way, I spotted my granny, standing tall exuding radiance and elegance, beaming with satisfaction. I kissed her cheeks and escorted her to the car. I couldn’t help but smile at her palpable exhilaration which she deftly tried hiding behind her composed demeanor. She was every bit as smart and sophisticated as I always remembered her to be.

After having a hearty conversation over some delectable delicacies, I couldn’t wait to meet the little children.

The faces of the beautiful little children lit up as we distributed gifts and spoke to them. I was having a great time, playing and mingling with the children when she introduced me to a couple who had adopted a toddler an year back. They had the most content smiles on their faces as they cradled the baby.

As if my grandmother was waiting for the right moment, she explained, “the toddler did not get a chance to go on a date with her adopted parents. She did not know their likes and dislikes and they didn’t know her likes and disliked. But they just accepted each other with open arms, with their strengths and flaws and love each other unconditionally.

Have you ever seen love of a more selfless kind?

Your grandfather and I had not even seen each other before we were bound in Holy Matrimony, yet, my most beautiful 55 years were spent with him.

Child, you cannot just expect your Prince Charming to arrive on his white horse and sweep you off your feet. You have to fall in love and build a relationship just as firmly as you lay bricks for the strong foundation of a building. Love is not just about the butterflies you feel when you see him smile or the giddiness you experience when he looks at you, it’s more about the assurance you feel when you hold his hand and the emanating warmth of your love when he kisses your forehead. That is kind of love you have to work on when it is already arranged by the stars watching out for you.
