Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on October 2nd, 1869 to Karamchand Uttamchand Gandhi and Putlibai Gandhi.

While we have seen a lot of pictures of Gandhi during his movements, marches and political meetings, very few images actually reflect his personal life. On what would have been his 146th birthday, let’s take a look at some really rare images of the Father of the Nation.

1. Mahatma Gandhi, when he was 6 years old 

Bapu was an average student, but one of the best educated among his siblings.

2. Bapu, with his brother Laxmidas

Laxmidas was married to Nandkunwar Gandhi and had 4 children – Samaldas Gandhi, Ranchoddas Gandhi, Jadavbehn Parekh and Radhabehn Kothari. Years later, Samaldas would join Bapu in his movement to free India.

3. Mahatma Gandhi with his friend, Sheikh Mehtab

Bapu started eating meat with Sheikh Mehtab. In fact, he hid this fact from his family for about a year, till he gave up meat on his own.

4. Kasturba Gandhi with her four sons

Bapu had four sons – Harilal Gandhi, Manilal Gandhi, Ramdas Gandhi and Devdas Gandhi.

5. A glimpse of Bapu’s passport

This passport was issued in 1931 for Bapu to attend the Round Table Conference in London.

10. Bapu, at his wife’s funeral

Bapu and Kasturba got married when they were 13 years old. During her final years, Ba, as she was fondly known, had two heart attacks and could not recover.

11. A rare picture of Bapu, after he had been assassinated

There were six assassinations attempts on Gandhi’s life. The sixth and final attempt was Nathuram Godse’s, who shot Bapu point blank.
