One thing we all love in Bollywood movies are the exotic locations our favourite actors shoot in. I often wonder how the hell did they manage to find such a beautiful locale?
We bring you 11 destinations in India that are not only popular with Bollywood, but are also budget friendly.
The number one destination with Bollywood is Kerala. Pukar, Nishabd, Chennai Express, Madras Cafe, Life of Pi and Dil Se are few movies to have shot here. You could also make reservation at Sevenmallay Bungalows in gorgeous Munnar – A lodging used as Amitabh Bachchan’s house in Nishabd.
Another popular, and truly breathtaking destination is Goa. The city has been popular with our film industry since 70s with the most recent film to be shot there being Ajay Devgn’s Drishyam. Rati Agnihotri and Kamal Hassan’s Ek Duje Ke Liye was also shot in Goa. Do visit Meenamma’s home town when visit next.
Who can forget that picturesque lake where Sharman Joshi and Madhavan finally meet Rancho. Pangong Lake is a must-visit if you are planning on a trekking trip to Ladakh. Don’t forget to visit Basgo Gompa where ‘Satrangi Re‘ from Dil Se was shot.
4. Jammu and Kashmir
While we all know Pahalgam and Gulmarg are the two most popular locations of J&K, we all really want to go to the Martand Sun Temple – the location chosen for Shahid Kapoor’s Haider’s song ‘Bismil‘.
5. Himachal Pradesh
Lootera, Highway, Saudagar, 3 idiots and Rockstar are few movies to have shot in Himachal Pradesh. Plan a visit to Lahaul and Spiti to experience Alia Bhatt’s journey in Highway. You could also visit Chail Palace – Rancho’s house in 3 idiots.
I fell in love with Rajasthan when I watched Anil Kapoor’s ‘Lamhe‘. If you are planning a long weekend trip to Jaipur from Delhi then don’t forget to visit Chomu Palace, Chokni Dhaani, Chand Baori, Narain Niwas Palace and Sambhar Lake.
Remember Nandini’s house in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam? It is the famous Vijay Vilas Palace in Madvi. And if you wish to to stay in that grand home like I did, then book your room now!
8. West Bengal
If you are planning on going to West Bengal then you can’t miss Kolkata or Darjeeling where SRK’s Main Hoon Na and Ranbir’s Barfi were shot. While if you are going for a weekend getaway then we suggest booking a room at Itachuna Rajbari where Lootera was shot. Don’t forget to visit Bhaskor’s ancestral home in Kolkata.
Satara District in Maharashtra has been quite popular with Bollywood. Dhom Dam, Wai, Menavali Ghat, Mahabaleshwar and Panchgani are few locations used in Chennai Express, Mangal Pandey, Dil Chahta Hain, Dabangg and Swades.
10. Tamil Nadu
Ananya’s hometown Chennai became famous again after ‘2 States‘. We got to see there is more to Chennai than Marina beach. If you are planning a visit you must go to the Shore Temple (the temple where Ananya and Krish’s wedding took place), Covelong Beach and Thalankuppam Dam. But if you want to check out the temple where Rahul carried Meenamma then you have to go to Vattamali Murugan Temple.
11. Arunachal Pradesh
Not many movies have been shot in this state, but if you are planning an off-beat vacation but in budget then Arunachal Pradesh’s Tawang district is for you. This is the place where SRK and Madhuri’s Koyla was shot. It is just surreal.
